Reflections
I have worked as a course assistant from my second semester at the university.
At that time, what is called now the Academic Success Centre (ASC) was called the
Learning Support Centre (LSC). The role of the course assistant is very important
as it serves as a link between the instructor and students. This gives us the ability
to see the influence of the different designs and content of various courses on the
students as we have daily or weekly interactions with the students.
Being a course assistant benefits me as well as the students. We provide meaningful
individual guidance in a unique way. It helps me in gaining experience in teaching
and monitoring, gaining skills in leadership and I have learned how to be an
effective communicator which is a necessary skill in order to be successful.

I decided to be a peer tutor because from my previous experience I always felt
shy to ask questions to the instructors, so I used to ask my colleagues because
the way the student delivers the information to each other is way easier. This is
because when a peer helps you, their knowledge is coming from the perspective of
someone who is not experienced in that major, so the information is communicated
in a more simplified and easier way. Personally, I have gained a lot from tutoring
others because now not only do I have tutoring experience, but I have also made
new friends and enlarged my circle. I love interacting and helping people, and I
always try to make life of other students easier. I also enjoy making them like the
subject as much as I do.

I have been working at the ASC for three years, and this step was one of the best
choices that I made to improve my academic standing as well as to help my peers
academically. For me, being a Course Assistant is more than helping students in
understanding the curriculum and getting good marks. In fact, it is more about
having a better understanding of the challenges students face, learning new
concepts and teaching them learning strategies, including how to prepare for
exams. Since I am a student like them, they are able to approach me freely, rather
than hesitate to share their issues. I feel that the ASC environment is one of the
best environments one can study in, either individually or in groups, and to be
guided by a knowledgeable tutor.
