Fieldtrips:
From Classroom to Real-World
Cleanco Waste Treatment Fieldtrip
Students from the College of Health Sciences, including those enrolled in the Waste Management course taught by
Dr. Rahaf and Dr. Hatem had the opportunity to visit state-of-art hazardous waste treatment facilities operated by
Cleanco Waste Treatment LLC in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, respectively.
The visit included a safety induction, an overview of the facility’s operations, and a tour of the laboratories, neutralisation
plant, and rotary kiln incinerators. Students observed advanced equipment used for calorific value, elemental and
molecular analysis to validate acceptance criteria, as well as state of art control systems and flue gas treatment units
which are linked to the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). The purpose of the visit was to provide students with
real-world exposure to concepts taught in their Waste Management and Pollution Monitoring & Control courses. The
trip aimed to reinforce classroom learning and the importance of these environmental topics.
Special thanks to our esteemed faculty members Dr. Sabeera, Dr. Calvyn, Dr. Hatem, and Dr. Nisreen for their time
in accompanying the students; to our teaching assistants Ms. Shamma and Ms. Mahra for their invaluable logistical
support; and to Dr. Rahaf and Dr. Sofyan for their support of such initiatives without which such visits would not be
possible, last but not least, a special thanks to Mr. Joseph D’Costa, for support with co-ordination and engagement.
