        SARA’S CAREER PATH

ADU Students get into their chosen majors in different ways. For instance, my friend Sara chose health care
as her career when she was just 11 years old after her Dad suffered a heart attack. Once at college, she
had a number of possibilities to think over, despite the fact that she was certain she wanted to work in the
medical field. Her advisor advised her to major in nutrition, the study of food, because the courses would
be helpful for someone wishing to pursue a career in health care. Besides, Sara was interested in sociology
since she was similarly fascinated by the study of human relations. Sara went to Khalifa University with a
medical internship during her senior year. From that internship, she learned that she was mainly interested
in medical issues upsetting women; therefore, she is currently taking another diploma in women’s health.

        WHEN OPPOSITES ATTRACT

Fatima and Selma shared a course during their first year at the College of Law, which was chosen at random.
Fatima was extroverted and friendly, while Selma was a bookish introvert. Their differences ended up being
a benefit even though at first they appeared to be an unusual pair. Fatima helped Selma with campus
activities and social gatherings in an effort to encourage her to come out of her shell. In exchange, Selma
helped Fatima into a relaxing environment where she could relax. They grew close throughout the course of
the year, building on one another’s strengths and helping each other overcome obstacles to their academic
success and personal success. Their unexpected friendship demonstrated how accepting diversity may
        have a positive impact.

        HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Kathum, an Iraqi student, came to Abu Dhabi University with both anxiety and joy. He first struggled with
homesickness and felt alienated due to the nostalgia he felt for his home country. Yet everything changed
after he interacted with our Student Affairs staff and attended many events in the Student Affairs area.
He met classmates who were of similar age and ideas, who also exposed him to the thriving local sports
community. Kathum found a place that seemed like a home away from home. There, he enjoyed all kinds
of activities, from ethnic cuisine festivals to dancing performances. What he liked most was that he his
confidence rocketed thanks to his engagement in Student Affairs activities and programs.
