Don’t Just Survive, Thrive
Advice from Seniors
1) University life is like school life. You do have a similar daily routine, so do not feel stressed or worry
about what could go wrong. However, what makes university life much more interesting is that you
have some free time between your classes, and that free time can be used to socialize, prepare an
activity for the university, learn more about the sports centre so that you can join a team and many
more.
2) Look for a partner that is in your department. So if you are a BME student, try to find another BME
student to always be with you in projects and assignments. Having that one person you can always
rely on will save you so much time and stress especially when you start taking challenging courses,
and you do not have time to deal with people in your group (whether you picked them or not) that
are slowing you down.

As freshmen, you will be really excited to start your new journey to experience college life. You will be
eager to check all the stories that you heard about college life. But be careful-don’t let this excitement
deter you from your goal to achieve your degree with flying colours. College is a new experience.
You should keep strict time table for your studies and other activities so that you can concentrate
well. This is a time where you can gain experience, so try to come out of your shell and participate
in extracurricular and volunteering activities as these give you experience for work and make your
CV attractive. Be wise in taking decisions. And avoid waiting for the last moment, that is, avoid
procrastination. Be mature enough to take account of your actions.

Time management is so important because in the university you have more than one course, and
each course has several assignments such as projects, quizzes and other things. So make sure when
any professor gives you work, you write it in your diary or any copybook, and try to arrange your days
and time. I used to have a diary with the days and dates, and I wrote in it, “On this day, I will do this
part from this research project”, and I finished all of them on time. Something that I always do from
my first year at university is that every week, I take out one day for myself when I don’t do anything
related to university.
I go outside with friends even though I am so stressed and have a lot to do, because 2 hours of seeing
my friends and enjoying will change my mood a lot and give me positive energy to come back and
study.
