Unlocking Adult Learning: The Power of Storytelling and Analogies

                                      Dr. Collette Anne Foster
                                      Senior Instructor of English

In adult education, we often prioritize the transfer of concrete knowledge and
skills. Yet, another equally powerful tool exists: storytelling and analogies.
These simple techniques tap into the brain’s preference for narrative, making
complex concepts more memorable, emotionally resonant, and relatable to
                                      learners’ experiences.

Beyond Facts: The Science Behind Storytelling

When we hear stories, our brains don’t just process language; they mirror
the experiences described. This phenomenon, known as ‘neural coupling’,
creates empathy and engagement beyond what dry facts can achieve (Zak, 2015). Stories activate brain areas
responsible for sensory processing, emotional response, and planning actions (Speer, Reynolds, Swallow, &
Zacks, 2009). In short, stories make learning real and relevant, enhancing comprehension and retention.

From Abstract to Concrete: Analogies as
                                                                 Learning Bridges

Analogies bridge the unfamiliar and the known.
By comparing a new concept to something
familiar, we create a mental scaffold supporting
                                                                 comprehension (Gentner, 1983). A well-chosen

cognitive load, and offer new perspectives on
                                                                 challenging material.

Unlocking Adult Learning – Storytelling & Analogies in Action: Practical Tips

        • Personalise It: Share stories from your research, professional practice, or life to illustrate concepts.
This adds authenticity and builds rapport.
        • Involve Learners: Ask students to share relevant stories or brainstorm analogies as a group. This
fosters active learning and diverse perspectives.
        • Go Beyond Words: Use visual aids (diagrams, infographics, videos) to complement stories or illustrate
complex analogies, catering to different learning styles.
        • Purposeful, Not Just Pretty: Ensure stories and analogies directly advance the lesson’s objectives.
Avoid using them solely as entertainment.
        • Diverse & Inclusive: Incorporate stories and analogies that reflect your learners’ diverse backgrounds.
This promotes belonging and validates their experiences.
